A traditional gambrel roof has four sides that fit within a semicircle or the top half of an octagon.

However there is another way of constructing the truss.
While the interior top chord appears flat a slight pitch typically 25 12 is used to ensure water will flow to an interior storm drain system.
Frankly it would probably have been cheaper to build a new garage rather than monster the existing one and now have to repair it.
By the use of strategically located x bracing loads from the endwalls and truss bottom chords can be transferred into the roof diaphragm.

Then the end of the bottom chord was cut to allow the top chord to overhang.
This is a special circumstance because some shed plans will have the top chord attach to the roof with a birdsmouth cut out.
If you are building a gambrel roofed shed then this is likely what you would use coupled with a bottom chord.
Roof truss bottom chord bracing properly designed and installed will not only keep the trusses in plane standing upright but will also brace the endwall columns.
It would have been less work to remove the roof and then re truss leaving the bottom chords in place to support the walls until the new roof framing is on.
